Role of Certified Medical Lab Technicians
Certified medical lab technicians perform testing using microscopes, chemicals and other laboratory equipment, while working under supervision from medical technologists or lab managers. The tests they perform are designed to aid physicians in diagnosing patients and providing therapeutic care.Certified medical lab technicians will do following
1. Prepare body fluids, tissue and cell specimens for examination
2. Operate and maintain medical equipment
3. Perform manual tests by following detailed instructions.
How to Become a Lab Technician
The basic eligibility criteria for Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) is degree or equivalent with Science subjects Or Pre- University Vocational course from a recognized Board with laboratory Technology as Vocational subject. BMLT is a 3 year programme.
Eligibility needed for Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) is degree or equivalent examination from a recognized University or Board. Duration of the course is 2 years.
There are also other certificate courses in lab technicians which needs degree as the eligibility. Courses are offered by colleges, universities as well as hospitals. The hospitals are usually affiliated with a college or university.
